Chemical Peels in Muswell Hill — Everything You Need to Know Before Your First Treatment

Chemical peels have been one of the most effective skin treatments available for decades — and with the arrival of modern medical-grade formulations, they are more precise, more comfortable and more transformative than ever. Yet they remain one of the most misunderstood treatments we offer at our Muswell Hill clinic.

In this guide we answer every question we hear from clients considering their first chemical peel — from what actually happens to your skin, to how to choose the right peel and what results you can realistically expect.

What is a Chemical Peel?

A chemical peel is a controlled skin resurfacing treatment. A carefully selected solution is applied to the skin — triggering a process of exfoliation and cellular renewal that removes damaged, dull or uneven skin from the surface and stimulates the production of fresh, healthy new skin beneath.

The result is skin that is visibly smoother, brighter and more even in tone — with improvements in texture, pigmentation, fine lines and overall radiance.

What Chemical Peels Are Not

There is a persistent misconception — largely driven by dramatic before and after images from decades ago — that chemical peels involve significant peeling, redness and downtime. Modern medical-grade peels are a world away from this.

At our Muswell Hill clinic we use the AlumierMD range of professional peels — a sophisticated collection of formulations developed specifically for clinical use. These peels are carefully calibrated to deliver genuine results with minimal disruption to your daily life. Many of our clients return to work the same day.

The Different Types of Chemical Peel

Not all chemical peels are the same — and choosing the right one for your skin is exactly what our consultation process is designed to achieve.

Superficial Peels Work on the outermost layer of the skin. Ideal for brightness, hydration and mild texture improvement. Virtually no downtime. Perfect for first-time clients or those with sensitive skin.

Medium-Depth Peels Penetrate into the upper dermis — producing more significant improvements in pigmentation, fine lines, acne scarring and skin texture. Some redness and light flaking for a few days.

Targeted Peels Formulated for specific concerns — our AlumierMD range includes peels specifically designed for:

  • Acne and congestion

  • Pigmentation and sun damage

  • Rosacea and sensitivity

  • Anti-ageing and fine lines

  • Dull, dehydrated skin

What to Expect at Your Peel Appointment

Before: Your skin will be cleansed and prepped. A pre-peel solution is applied to ensure even penetration.

During: The peel solution is applied and left on the skin for a precisely timed period. You may feel a mild tingling or warmth — this is completely normal and passes quickly.

After: Your skin will be neutralised, calmed and protected with SPF. Most clients look slightly flushed for a few hours — similar to mild sunburn.

The days that follow: Depending on the depth of your peel, you may experience some tightness and light flaking between days 2 and 5. This is the skin renewing itself — and it is a completely normal part of the process.

How Many Sessions Will I Need?

A single peel will produce a noticeable improvement — but the most significant and lasting results come from a course of treatments. At our Muswell Hill clinic we typically recommend:

Concern

Recommended Course

General brightness & maintenance

3–4 sessions, 4–6 weeks apart

Pigmentation

4–6 sessions

Acne & congestion

4–6 sessions

Fine lines & texture

4–6 sessions

Rosacea

3–4 sessions with specific formulations

Why Medical-Grade Matters

The AlumierMD peels we use at our Muswell Hill clinic are not available in high street settings. They contain higher concentrations of active ingredients — precisely calibrated for professional use — and are only suitable for application by trained clinicians.

The difference between a medical-grade peel and an over-the-counter equivalent is significant. High street peels work on the surface only — producing a temporary brightening effect that fades within days. Medical-grade peels penetrate to the correct depth to produce genuine, lasting change in the skin.
